Western Cape to prepare for rain and floods

A recent article on News24 has highlighted that Western Cape residents should prepare for rainy weather and possible flooding this winter. This news comes as the region faces a devastating drought with dam levels currently at an average of 22.1%.

Mutual & Federal urges Western Cape residents to take the necessary precautions ahead of this warning. “While we cannot predict the weather, it is becoming apparent that it is becoming more severe and volatile. We have seen this in the Western Cape where the recent drought has given way to potential flooding,” says Hannes Smith, Head of Personal Lines Sales and Operations at Mutual & Federal.

Individuals residing in the Western Cape should look at ways to alleviate the damage that flooding can cause to their property and belongings. Mutual & Federal recommends the following guidelines to plan around these weather warnings as the most important thing is your safety and the safety of your family.
  • Always ensure that you have emergency numbers in an accessible place.
  • It is predicted that there may be increased mudslides especially due to the recent dry weather and fires in the Western Cape. Stay away from sloping areas as much as possible.
  • Ensure that all your gutters are cleaned from leaves and other debris and that your roof is in good repair.
  • When driving in the rain, increase your following distance by a minimum of three car lengths. It is also essential to decrease your driving speed, turn on your vehicle’s headlights and make use of your hazards when necessary.
  • With heavy rain and flooding, road conditions often deteriorate. Keep an eye out for potholes that are often hidden by water.
  • Where possible, avoid driving through flooded areas. If you have to, it is essential that you drive slowly and continually to avoid seizing your engine.
Smith adds: “If you are stuck in a flash flood, and your car is taking on water, do not open the door. Instead, climb through your window and head for safety. It is essential that you move as quickly as possible to higher ground and remain there until assistance arrives.”

Weather patterns and predictions can never be guaranteed however, individuals should be cautious and follow the suggested guidelines to ensure the protection of your home, family and belongings.

“Mutual & Federal has a 24/7 Swiftcare service created for emergency purposes for their customers (0860 247 365). For any of our customers that might need emergency claims assistance, Mutual & Federal has ensured that it pro-actively manages capacity to its call centres to expedite any claims calls,” concludes Smith.
