Eight of SA’s Top 20 hospitals are NHN members

Eight of South Africa’s Top 20 hospitals for patient care are members of the National Hospital Network (NHN). This is according to the latest Discovery Health Patient Survey Score (PaSS), which surveys adult patients and members of Discovery Health about their experiences at 136 South African hospitals. The survey covers questions on issues such as general patient care, pain management and how well healthcare providers communicate.

NHN, a network founded for South African independent hospitals in 1996, accounts for a significant proportion of the top hospitals, with eight facilities ranked among the Discovery Health Top 20 namely: Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre, Hillcrest Private Hospital, Lowveld Hospital, Midvaal Hospital, Wilmed Park Private Hospital, Gateway Private Hospital, Cormed Clinic and Zuid-Afrikaans Hospital.

Kurt Worrall-Clare, CEO of NHN, says the organisation sees patient opinion as a crucial benchmark of its success: “Through various ongoing quality assurance and service improvement campaigns within the group, NHN is constantly striving to raise the bar for patient care at its member facilities. We believe this not only enhances patient safety and makes them more comfortable while they are under our care, but also helps to improve their outcomes after they have been discharged.”

He notes that the recognition highlights the fact that independent hospitals are a viable alternative to the existing hospital groups. “As stand-alone facilities we are encouraged to see that they rank so highly in terms of patient satisfaction. The Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre‚ Hillcrest Private Hospital and Gateway Private Hospital are black-owned hospitals, underscoring NHN’s value as a significant support structure for driving transformation in the private hospital industry,” says Worrall-Clare.

“Our mission is to continue striving to offer world class patient care throughout our network of 210 member hospitals, day clinics, psychiatric facilities, ophthalmology facilities, sub-acute facilities and rehabilitation facilities,” says Worrall-Clare.
