Southern Cross Risk Management - The Brokers Broker

Southern Cross Risk Management (Pty) Ltd is one of South Africa’s leading niche short-term intermediaries that focuses on the highly specialized field of liability insurance with key emphasis on Professional Indemnity Insurance to FSP’s.  SCRM is a duly authorised FSP that was founded in 2003. It operates under the joint leadership of its directors John Austen and Lars Forssman.

Lars left a leading Public Insurance Company as an Executive Board Member to join SCRM. He served as the president of the Insurance Institute of Gauteng in 2007 thereby displaying a strong commitment to the insurance industry. Lars brings a wealth of valued experience and competencies to the team and clients spanning insurance technical complexities, development and maintenance of effective client distribution channels, value added product implementation and sound leadership.

John is the founder and a principal driver of SCRM. He established and then headed a highly successful specialist Financial Lines division at a listed brokerage before establishing Southern Cross. He has over the years been the broker and trusted advisor to clients the likes of Standard Bank, the Central Securities Depository Strate, Peregrine, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the South African Futures Exchange (SAFEX) and the Bond Exchange.

Michael Salant joined the group in August 2013 and now manages the legal risk management, specialist liability and PI schemes operations.  He was admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa and is an experienced insurance professional.

For a number of years independent brokers have found it increasingly difficult to survive within the hostile insurance environment.  Compliance with onerous regulations, limited resources, direct insurance offerings, costly administration and a maze of products are amongst the factors that limit growth, have caused brokers to exit the industry and have placed barriers to new entrants.

In this landscape of spiralling costs and compromised income, service efficiencies require improvement, sales expansion needs focus and risks need prudent management.

It is in the role of expert facilitator that SCRM has responded and chosen to support brokers through two channels.

Firstly, in the specialist technical field of liabilities insurance we:

  • arrange appropriate and tailored PI  insurance coverage for FSPs and their clients
  • provide access to legal risk management systemically through
    • the publication of educational articles
    • presentations
    • seminars
    • pertinent solutions
  • facilitate the procurement, structure and provision of advice on complex liability insurance products thus enabling access to expanded solutions and opportunities
  • manage claims professionally .

Secondly, through our subsidiary, Southern Cross Assist, we aim to further entrench broker/client relationships by providing value that transcends insurance products and services. 

Here we provide digital aid to extend the brokers strategic marketing thrust and administrative capabilities as follows:

  • FSPs and their clients will gain from the extensive range of services and products under our lifestyle benefit loyalty program
  • Our exceptionally useful, market leading Mobi App. will enable enhanced communication and also improve productivity through efficient administration functionality

Our web and mobi applications can all be white labelled.

Within our focused scope of operations, we provide the expertise, training, tools and administrative platforms to allow brokers to do what they do best – cultivate relationships and sell solutions.
